Named watercraft types is supplemented by the datasets Watercraft types and Mass-produced watercraft.

Maritime heritage is a concern for many stakeholders. Eight maritime museums have therefore a collaborative effort on joint name authorities and vocabulary so as to enable coherent descriptions of maritime heritage.

Collaborative bodies include:
Aust-Agder Museum and Archives, Museum of Bohuslän, part of Västarvet, The Norwegian Maritime Museum, part of the Norwegian Folk Museum,
Maritime Museum and Aquarium in Gothenburg, The Maritime Museum on Åland and National Maritime Museums in Sweden, which consists of the Naval Museum, the Maritime Museum and Vasa Museum.

The objective of our cooperation is to provide improved quality, searchability and usability of information surrounding maritime heritage. Please use the name authorities and vocabulary and contact Malin Joakimson (Malin.Joakimson@maritima.se) if you and your department wish to participate in the cooperation.

Terms which are in conformity with Wikidata are connected to this dataset so as to facilitate linkage and searchability. Please contact us if there is anything you miss.

Watercraft types contains terms that are useful when a ship, a depiction of a vessel, or objects linked to a vessel are registered. Watercraft types is supplemented by the datasets Named watercraft types and Mass-produced watercraft.

The list of ship types is based on, and an expansion of, The Getty Research Institute's Art and Architecture Thesaurus and the terms related to Watercraft.
The material has been translated, sorted, and supplemented to meet the requirements for working with maritime heritage in the Nordic waters. Terms, which are in conformity with the Getty Thesaurus, are connected to this dataset as well as to Wikidata so as to facilitate linkage and searchability.
