There is no fashion in film, these terms are mutually exclusive. Each accessory and garment that a character wears in a motion picture has a unique history in the same way that our own clothes have histories. Fashion is a commodity – fashion designers have labels. Costume designers – do not have labels and they work in a world where the film is the commodity. Costumes are created to support the story. They are not the story. The best costumes are the ones that the audience doesn’t notice. They disappear into the fabric of the narrative. (UCLA)
