Performing Arts Repertoire Database

Welcome to the Performing Arts Repertoire Database!

The purpose of the database is to create a structured and searchable overview of performing arts productions, their artistic origins, and participating actors. It is used to document and make information about repertoires accessible, which facilitates research, administration, and cultural heritage preservation.

Statens Musikverk collects, cares for, preserves, and makes the cultural heritage of music, theatre, and dance accessible through operations such as The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts, Music and Theatre Library of Sweden, Svenskt visarkiv – Centre for Swedish folk music and jazz research, Elektronmusikstudion (EMS), and Caprice Music. Digitized material is published via DigitaltMuseum and other platforms so that it can be accessed both from home and on site.
The authority works actively with digitization to preserve and make the cultural heritage accessible. Digitization is a strategic tool for fulfilling the authority’s mission according to the ordinance (2010:1922) – to document, preserve, and disseminate the cultural heritage.

The Performing Arts Repertoire Database is a database that gathers information about performances, the works on which they are based, and actors – both individuals and organizations – who participated. It makes it possible to see connections between productions, artistic works, and participating parties in a coherent system.

Performances – the stage productions themselves – form the core of the database. Performance is used here as a collective term for various types of theatre, music, and dance performances. Each performance is registered with premiere date and location. From the performance there are links to works that the production is based on, to performing arts organizations, and to participants and creators both on and behind the stage. Through the datasets Works, Organizations, and Persons (as well as relevant authority records in other datasets), you will find connections back to the performances. If we have lacked reliable personal data or organizational information, no separate record has been created; instead, the information is present only as the name as text in the performance record.

The original database was built in a self-developed system. The collection of information was initially based on older theatre posters and theatre programmes, and was later expanded with information from, among other things, photo collections and archives. The purpose was to facilitate searches in the archival material preserved at Musik- och teaterbiblioteket. There has always been a desire to link the information directly to collections and archives. By publishing the documentation on KulturNav, we can now share it with others and link it to photographs and objects displayed on DigitaltMuseum.

The registration of original data was done manually by several people, which meant varying ways of registering. During the conversion to KulturNav, the data has been updated and quality-assured as far as possible. However, spelling variations, limited information, and outright errors in the original data may have affected the result.

We appreciate help in discovering errors! Please contact us if you find something that should be corrected, or create a login on KulturNav and contribute suggestions for corrections and additions directly in the records.
