Suggest changes to data

KulturNav is a service developed with the aim of enabling different organizations to collaborate in building and managing common terminology and authority data. Datasets can be co-managed, and users from collaborating organizations can have different roles in the process. Learn more about permissions and rights.

There are also features allowing all logged-in users in KulturNav to suggest new entries in datasets, as well as propose changes and additions to individual entries.

Here's how it works:

Suggesting a new entry in a dataset

Suggesting a new entry in a dataset involves creating a new entry and allowing the dataset's editors to consider whether to approve it and its administrators to decide whether to publish it. Follow these steps to create a new entry.

It's important to provide references for the dataset managers to evaluate your suggestion. References are specified under the References tab, where you can cite both printed sources and web references.

Suggesting other changes and additions in entries

As a logged-in user of KulturNav, you can suggest changes, additions, and information removals from properties in individual entries. The changes are suggested using the same field structure used for editing, but the suggestion is managed separately until it's approved or rejected by the editorial team.

You can, for example:

  • Suggest correcting a misspelled word.
  • Suggest that a property is incorrect and should be removed.
  • Suggest translating a term into another language.
  • Suggest a link to a Wikipedia article. The link is saved as a See also relation (rdfs:seeAlso).
  • Suggest a Wikidata link. The link is saved as a Same as relation if the link is from an object or an Exact match if it's from a term.

Here's how:

  • 1) Go to the entry you want to modify and open the entry's page.
  • 2) Click on the suggest button at the bottom right of the page. You must be logged in to leave suggestions or additions. Register first if you're not a user already, and then log in.

  • 3a) Suggest changes in existing information in the entry by clicking on the editing icon - - in front of the field name you want to change.

  • 3b) If you want to add missing information to the entry, choose a field in the suggestion panel. Properties in which you can suggest additions and changes are displayed in the panel. Select a property. There are some quick selections at the top of the panel to suggest, for example, Wikipedia and Wikidata links and matches against internal and external entries.

  • 3c) In both cases, you'll get a form - Suggest addition or change - where you can make suggestions for corrections and additions regarding the information in the property you've chosen. See more below.

  • 4) You can also write a Message/comment to submit a suggestion or leave a comment on the page. The message is sent by email to the dataset's editorial team. The message is also added as a dialogue on the respective entry. Read more about dialogue..

Suggestion Panel

The panel opens on the right side of the page when you click the suggest button at the bottom right of the page. In the panel, you can select properties to suggest additions and changes to, and you can also leave a message to the editorial team if you're not sure where your correction should be added.

The list of properties organizes and groups the properties in the same order as in the editing form. Here's how you can interpret the list:

  • A property with bold title is already filled and displayed in the facts tab.
  • The icon indicates that the property belongs to the basic field set.
  • The icon indicates that the property belongs to the extended field set.

Click on a property to leave your suggestion. The property then opens in the form Suggest addition or change:

Form Suggest addition or change

The form appears when you want to suggest a change or addition of information in the entry. If you have editing rights to the entry, you can save changes directly.

  • Edit existing information by changing the text.
  • Always provide a source showing where you obtained the information behind your proposed change. You do this in the field source information.
  • You can also paste a link (URL) to a source.
  • Add a translation by expanding the language field in the text box and specifying the translation in the desired language.
  • Suggest that the property be removed by clicking the Suggest deletion button.
  • Save your suggestion by clicking the Save suggestion button.
  • If you have editing rights in the entry, you can save your edit directly by clicking the Save button.
  • Cancel without saving.
  • Finding entries with suggestions

Show entries with suggestions If you're logged in, you can filter entries with suggestions in datasets, folders, and search results by clicking the button under the filter panel.

Discuss or have dialogue about suggestions

Under the Dialogue tab, you as a logged-in user can comment or discuss the content of the entry and, for example, have a dialogue about given suggestions. Read more about dialogue..
