Ship-rigged warships of the 17th through early 19th century, carrying many heavy cannon and intended to fight in a line-of-battle formation; in the Royal Navy, ships of the line were those warships carrying more than a minimum number of guns, rising from 30 in the 1650s to 80 in the 1840s.
